Custom Sensor Innovation: A Solution for Sensitive Robotics
Modern robotics relies on precise, sensitive, and reliable force measurement. In a collaborative project*, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) and Senstech AG have given a robot the ability to sense “touch”.
At the heart of this innovation is a custom-designed Flange Sensor developed by Senstech. It features three strategically arranged load cells that capture force data accurately while meeting the mechanical requirements of a compact and robust structure. The sensor measures the forces applied to the robot’s end effector, enabling seamless physical interaction and smart responses to its surroundings.
By combining signal processing algorithms with mathematical modeling, SUPSI developed a method to estimate, in real time, the 3D force vector acting on the end effector under various operating conditions. This serves as the basis for a closed-loop system that directly controls the robot’s movements through force sensor data.
